A landscape-led collection of 11 contemporary family homes, carefully integrated within the rural setting of Chipperfield.
The design is rooted in the landscape character of the site, with the existing trees, mature hedgerows, topography and established vegetation forming the starting point for the development. Rather than imposing a conventional residential layout, the proposals have been carefully shaped around these natural features, creating a scheme that feels embedded within its surroundings.
A gently meandering shared-surface street follows the natural form of the site, with the homes arranged in a series of carefully considered groupings. Generous gardens, retained vegetation and new landscape planting create a strong sense of greenery throughout, while maintaining visual connections with the surrounding countryside.
The architectural language draws inspiration from the Arts and Crafts character of the existing house and the distinctive rural vernacular of Chipperfield. Red brick, flint, clay tiles and slate are combined with varied roof forms, gables, chimneys and carefully considered detailing to create a cohesive yet varied collection of homes.
Each dwelling has been designed to respond to its individual position within the landscape, creating subtle variations in scale, orientation and character across the development. The result is a contemporary interpretation of traditional rural architecture, providing spacious and distinctive homes that feel appropriate to their setting.
Landscape and ecology are woven throughout the design, with existing vegetation retained and enhanced wherever possible and sustainable drainage integrated naturally into the wider landscape strategy.
The project is a considered example of landscape-led design, where the character of the site has shaped the architecture, layout and experience of the development from the outset.
